Sex and test
After having oral sex with a male partner and protected anal sex (with a condom). I did not know my partner’s HIV status, so I became anxious and started taking PEP for the last 4 days. I have now contacted my partner and taken him for a rapid HIV test, and his result came back negative. What should I do now? Should I continue the medication? I am also concerned about side effects if I continue it for 28 days. Please advise.”

Next Steps
Based on the update that your partner's Rapid HIV Test is Negative, the clinical risk of you contracting HIV from this encounter is effectively non-existent. A negative result from the source person is the most significant piece of evidence in post-exposure management. According to standard medical guidelines (CDC/WHO), if the source person is confirmed HIV-negative, Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) can be discontinued immediately. Continuing the medication for the full 28 days offers no additional clinical benefit in this scenario and only exposes you to unnecessary drug side effects."
Health Tips
Stop Medication Now: You do not need to finish the pack. You can safely stop taking the tablets today. The anxiety regarding side effects is valid, and stopping the drugs is the best way to avoid them since the medicine is no longer required. Routine Screening: Even though the risk from this event is cleared, it is always a good clinical practice to get a 4th Generation HIV Ag/Ab Combo Test for yourself as a baseline, just to have a clean record for your own peace of mind. Partner's Window Period: If your partner has not had any other high-risk exposures in the last 4 weeks, his negative result is extremely reliable and conclusive for your safety as well.

Your exposure was already low risk and partner’s negative rapid test is reassuring 👍 PEP side effects are usually manageable, but whether to continue depends on timing details best reviewed once in consult.

Anti virals have a lot of side effects and should not be taken unless absolutely needed So if the test has come out to be negative you can ideally stop the treatment
