Infection sex
“Over the past 5 days, I have been asking about my risk after having oral sex with a male partner and protected anal sex (with a condom). I did not know my partner’s HIV status, so I became anxious and started taking PEP for the last 4 days. I have now contacted my partner and taken him for a rapid HIV test, and his result came back negative. What should I do now? Should I continue the medication? I am also concerned about side effects if I continue it for 28 days. Please advise.”

If condom was intact and partner’s rapid HIV test is negative, your risk is extremely low 👍 continue or stop PEP can be decided after reviewing exact exposure details once.

Scenario 1: Condom used correctly without any breakage or spillage: Risk of exposure is extremely low irrespective of HIV status of either partner. You can stop taking PEP. Scenario 2: Condom was not used correctly: Risk of exposure is low as the other partner is HIV negative. But you have to make sure that the other partner was not in contact with any HIV positive person in last 1-3 months. This is because HIV test can be false negative if contact was within 1-3 months (window period). If this is the scenario then also you can stop taking PEP. Scenario 3: Condom was not used correctly or you are not sure if there was any breakage or spillage. HIV test was negative but you are not sure if the other person was in contact with any other HIV positive person during last 1-3 months. In this scenario better to continue PEP.
Health Tips
Always use condom correctly as they can prevent exposure in more than 90% of cases. Please stick to one partner rather than goofing around.
