Low iron levels
We have a family history of thalessemia. I have my Haemoglobin level 12.40 but CbC mentioned that I have hypochromic microcytic anemia. Do I have chances of beta thalessemia? I am experiencing fatigue, brain fog, muscle weakness, low mood, low energy, painful periods.

It's essential to get a comprehensive picture of your complete blood count (CBC). Additional parameters, such as your RBC count and MCV, will be beneficial. We can then use these results to derive the Mentzer index, which serves as a preliminary screening for thalassemia. If there is a suspicion of thalassemia based on this screening, we can proceed with an HPLC test for definitive confirmation. Considering your age, even if you do have thalassemia, it is likely to be in the form of a trait, which typically doesn't lead to significant health issues. However, understanding your status is important, especially if your partner also carries the trait, as this could increase the likelihood of having children with beta thalassemia. It's also important to keep in mind that conditions like iron deficiency and other causes of microcytic hypochromic anemia can occur alongside thalassemia and will require appropriate treatment.

Consult to discuss your tests and further plan of action

You should get the test done for Thalassemia. We don't rely much on diagnosis of Thalassemia from CBC.
