Is minoxidil safe for hair thinning

Iam 20. My hair is thinning and I have hair fall. 5 years ago a dermatologist prescribed tretinoin for my face acne and it has triggered a lot of hair fall since then. My blood test reports are normal. I want to know if minoxidil is safe to use under doctor supervision. What are the side effects of taking/stopping?
