Doubt related to rabies vaccine
Hello. Yesterday I was scratched by a stray cat and it was bleeding abit, i washed the scratces thoroghly, got TT injection and rabivax-s but my 1st dose was administered in the left buttocks region. I saw the guidelines in the internet that it should be given to shoulder. So i spoke to my doctor to give it to the shoulder from the next dose. So can i get the ramining doses on my shoulder? Pls let me know. Thank you.

Hi, Rabies vaccine works well even if the first dose was in the buttock. You can safely take the remaining doses in the shoulder as planned. Keep following the schedule. Feel free to consult for further guidance.

Yes, you can and should switch to the deltoid (shoulder) muscle for your remaining doses. The gluteal (buttocks) region is not recommended for rabies vaccination as it has been shown to produce a lower immune response compared to the deltoid. Your first dose in the buttocks will still contribute to your immunity, but switching to the shoulder from dose 2 onwards is the correct approach — exactly as you have already discussed with your doctor. Your vaccine schedule and protection will not be compromised by this switch.
Next Steps
Continue your remaining doses on schedule (Day 3, 7, 14) in the deltoid muscle. Feel free to consult me directly on Practo if you have any further concerns about your PEP course.
