1. What the doctor told you actually means Your wife has two separate issues: A. Breast lumps B. Chest wall pain (costochondritis) These are not the same thing. The lumps are in the breast. Costochondritis is not in the breast — it is in the chest wall. The doctor confirmed the lumps are benign (not cancer). And the pain she is feeling is most likely from costochondritis, not from the lumps. 2. What is “Benign Breast Lump”? “Benign” simply means: Non-cancerous, harmless, not dangerous. Most common benign breast lumps: • Fibroadenoma • Fibrocystic changes • Hormonal cysts These lumps do NOT turn into cancer. A breast ultrasound is usually done to confirm, but your doctor has clinically felt they are benign. 3. What is Costochondritis? Costochondritis is inflammation of the cartilage where the ribs attach to the breastbone. In simple words: The joints in the front of the chest become irritated → causes pain. It is not related to breast lumps. 4. Symptoms of Costochondritis • Pain on pressing the chest • Pain when taking deep breath • Pain that increases when moving, coughing, stretching • Pain near breast area (often confused with breast pain) • No swelling • No redness • Completely harmless Costochondritis pain can feel like breast pain because the area is close to the breast. 5. Why the doctor said the breast lumps are NOT the cause of pain Benign breast lumps usually: • Do NOT cause pain • Feel rubbery or smooth • Move easily under the skin • Are harmless Inflammation of chest cartilage (costochondritis) is painful, so that explains her discomfort.
Next Steps
Treatment for Costochondritis Very simple: • Warm compress on the chest area • Pain-relief medicine like ibuprofen or diclofenac for 3–5 days • Avoid heavy lifting • Avoid pushing, pulling, or twisting movements • Improve posture • Gentle stretching Costochondritis usually settles within 1–3 weeks.
Health Tips
What to do for the breast lumps • Get a breast ultrasound (if not already done) • Follow-up every 6–12 months • Watch for any change in size • These lumps usually stay stable or shrink with time Benign lumps do NOT become cancer.
