Vitamin D3: Switch to a low maintenance dose (for example, once weekly or once monthly), even in India. Vitamin B12: If levels are normal, continue a low oral dose or stop if diet is adequate. Diet matters: Vitamin D: milk, curd, butter, eggs, fish Vitamin B12: milk, curd, cheese, eggs, meat (very important if vegetarian) Blood test after 3–6 months helps decide whether to continue or stop. This approach helps maintain normal levels without overuse of supplements.

After completing treatment doses: Do not continue high-dose tablets daily unless advised. Maintenance: Vitamin D3: once monthly or once weekly low dose Vitamin B12: dietary sources or monthly tablet/injection if deficient Best approach is to repeat blood tests and then decide maintenance dose

Hello, I am Dr. Romain Rajan, General Physician (Ex Govt Medical Officer at RML Hospital, New Delhi), and your case has been allotted to me. Thank you for your question. This is a very common and important doubt, and I will explain it clearly. After completing a 3-month correction course of Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D3, you should not stop them completely. Most deficiencies recur if maintenance is not continued, especially in adults with limited sun exposure or dietary gaps. Vitamin D3 After correction, shift to maintenance dosing: • Vitamin D3 2000 IU daily OR • Vitamin D3 60,000 IU once every 2 weeks Also try to get 20–30 minutes of sunlight exposure at least 3–4 days a week. Target Vitamin D level should be above 35–40 ng/ml. Vitamin B12 After correction, maintenance is required in most people: • Methylcobalamin 1000–1500 mcg 2–3 times per week • Long term or lifelong maintenance may be needed, especially if vegetarian or with acidity issues. Target Vitamin B12 level should be above 400–500 pg/ml. What you should do next • Continue maintenance doses rather than stopping • Repeat Vitamin D and B12 levels after 3–6 months • Adjust dose based on reports and symptoms Please remember that vitamin supplementation is often a long term maintenance process, not just a short course treatment. For personalised one to one consultation and dose adjustment, you can reach out to me on WhatsApp at 85271646 seven seven.

You should ideally get rechecked. And things should be taken from there. If you dont want to get rechecked/cant get rechecked , you can take measures to increase vit b12 in your  diet naturally. About Vit B12 :- Majority of Indian have a vegetarian diet and vit b12 is quite scarce in vegetarian food. You can increase intake of curd paneer milk and chaas . If you eat eggs than you can take 1 whole egg a day for 5 to 7 times a week. Vit b12 is also abundunt in things like chicken and organ meat. Taking these weekly once and twice will be great as well if you eat non veg. Regarding Vit D :- Not much you can do from a diet point of view but taking sunlight especially in the morning can sometimes be benficial.
