Tonoferon drops 1mL for 8month old baby
Hi Our pediatrician has prescribed Tonoferon drops 1mL daily for my 8month old baby. Her stool is very hard and constipated for 3weeks now. Makes me wonder is this the correct dose or it is too much? Even with Duphalac dose constipation is not improved

Hello Tonoferon drops is an supplement. Iron supplements usually cause constipation. You may discontinue the same for sometime and observe. Also milk consumption of the baby is not mentioned as to she is taking mothers feed or top feed. Would need a complete insight to guide you on the above.
Next Steps
Discontinue the drops for a while and try different types of milk top feed, cow milk etc and see what works for her

Hi , Monika here from Everyday Nourish health and wellness diet clinic Constipation after Tonoferron is very common—iron often makes stools hard. 1 mL is a standard dose for an 8-month-old, but if constipation continues even with Duphalac, it’s important to recheck the iron dose or switch to a gentler iron supplement (your pediatrician will guide this). For quick relief, add baby-safe foods like pear/prune /soaked raisin /papaya purée (4 ), moong dal water, and lauki soup, and avoid banana, potato, and excess rice cereal. For a personalised constipation-relief plan for your baby, you can simply book a consultation through my Practo profile.

Tonoferron (iron drops) can commonly cause hard stools and constipation in infants. For an 8-month-old, ensure adequate hydration, include age-appropriate high-fibre foods like mashed pears, prunes, papaya, and give small amounts of warm water after meals (only if advised by your pediatrician). Since constipation has persisted even with Duphalac, please recheck the iron dose with your pediatrician—they may adjust the dosage or switch to a gentler iron formulation.
