Tapeworm expulsion
I have been prescribed Albendazole and Praziquantel, if the medication is successful in killing the tapeworm, will the entire thing come out of my anus, several feet long?

Hello, I am Dr. Romain Rajan, General Physician (Ex Govt Medical Officer at RML Hospital, New Delhi), and your case has been allotted to me. I understand this is a very common fear, so let me clarify it clearly and honestly. Short answer: No, the entire tapeworm usually does NOT come out whole or several feet long. What actually happens after Albendazole or Praziquantel These medicines kill or paralyze the tapeworm inside the intestine. After that: • The worm loses its grip on the intestinal wall • It gets digested partially • It is passed out in broken pieces or microscopic parts mixed with stool • Most patients do not notice anything unusual in the stool Seeing a long intact worm coming out is uncommon, especially with proper medication. What you may notice • Stool may look slightly different for a day or two • Mild abdominal discomfort • Loose stools temporarily This is normal and expected. When to consult a doctor • If you pass large visible segments repeatedly • If abdominal pain, vomiting, or weakness increases • If symptoms persist despite completing the course Important advice • Complete the full prescribed course • Maintain good hygiene and hand washing • Follow up stool test may be advised to confirm clearance Please be reassured. The treatment you are taking is effective and safe, and dramatic outcomes like a whole worm coming out are rare. If you would like close monitoring, reassurance during treatment, or follow up planning, a direct consultation helps greatly. For personalised one to one consultation, you may reach out to me on WhatsApp at 85271646 seven seven. Wishing you a smooth recovery. Dr. Romain Rajan General Physician

The whole thing never comes out in one piece. It's expelled gradually.

No! The tapeworm might not come out as a whole in your faeces or Anus. The drug kinda kills the tapeworm and it is eliminated I.e. digested internally most of the times. There can be segments but not the whole worm. Although, kindly consult if you experience abdominal pain, weakness, nausea or other complaints.
