Peeling skin around the nails—especially the thumb and index finger—is most commonly NOT anemia.
The usual causes are:
• Irritant or contact dermatitis (frequent hand washing, sanitizers, detergents)
• Dry skin / winter eczema
• Habitual picking or biting
• Mild fungal infection (less common if no itching/redness)
• Nutritional deficiency → more often B-complex (B2, B3, B7/biotin), zinc, not iron anemia
Iron-deficiency anemia usually causes pale skin, fatigue, breathlessness, brittle nails (spoon-shaped)—not isolated peeling around nails.
So this looks local and benign, not a systemic disease.
Next Steps
1. Protect the skin barrier
• Reduce sanitizer/soap exposure
• Use gloves for cleaning/wet work
2. Moisturize aggressively
• Thick emollient (petroleum jelly / ceramide cream) 2–3× daily
• Apply at night and cover with cotton gloves if possible
3. Check nutrition only if persistent (>3–4 weeks)
• CBC (for anemia)
• Vitamin B12, iron, zinc only if other symptoms exist
4. See a doctor if
• Cracks are painful/bleeding
• Redness, itching, or discharge appears
• Nail shape/color changes
Health Tips
• Avoid peeling skin manually — it delays healing
• Use fragrance-free creams
• Mild hydrocortisone 1% for 5–7 days can help if inflamed (only if advised)
• Drink adequate water, ensure protein intake
• Don’t assume anemia without symptoms or tests
From your description, this is very unlikely to be anemia and usually settles with proper skin care.
If you’d like, you can book an online consultation with me—I can quickly assess whether this is simple dermatitis or if any tests or targeted treatment are needed, saving you unnecessary worry and trial-and-error.
The differential diagnosis according to your presenting symptoms could be - due to external causes like frequent hand washing , allergy to certain detergent , chemicals or it may be due to an eczema , Anemia as u said , onychomycosis or it may be due to hypothyroidism or it might be due to dry skin also
Share a picture for your finger for better diagnosis and treatment ..
Health Tips
1)Use moisturisers / lactocalamine lotion might work if dry skin is the cause
2) I would suggest u for dietary changes and include citrus fruits like lemon , oranges in your diet & eat green leafy vegetables along with lentils
Sharing an image would allow better understanding.
It could be a sign of deficiencies, reaction to certain products - detergents/ other Chemicals related to work.
