Aphthous ulcers are painful, round sores in the mouth that usually heal in 7–14 days. Most aphthous ulcers heal on their own; home care focuses on pain and irritation: Saltwater rinses: 1 tsp salt in 1 cup warm water; rinse 2–3 times daily. Avoid irritants: Spicy, acidic, rough foods; alcohol-based mouthwashes . Local anesthetics: Benzocaine or lidocaine gels for pain relief . Oral hygiene: Gentle brushing; avoid trauma to ulcers .
