Knee pain - alternatives to knee surgery
My mother (55 yrs) has knee pain due to which she experiences morning stiffness in her knee joints and couldn't easily got up from bed. She has diabetes and thyroid also. Consulted from an ortho doctor and the doctor advised knee surgery as there's gap in her left knee joint. But she's reluctant to this option so early and wants to cure it through medicines and from diet changes. Is it possible now? If not, pls suggest some diet options to be included in her routine so that the pain gets reduced atleast if not corrected totally.

Hi Knee problems esp if it is osteoarthritis occurs due to wear and tear as we get older and there is lack or reduction of a substance called glucosamine in the body. Example reduction or lack of insulin will make the body’s ability to maintain blood glucose levels in normal state that leads to diabetes similarly lack of glucose decreases the fluid which helps the lubrication of the knee joints hence glucosamine has to replenished in the body. Eating shell fish may aid a little but glucosamine is present on the connective tissue of shell fish we don t consume the shell so getting it from food is a bit difficult In early stages of osteoarthritis certain exercises and consuming shell fish Plenty of onion, garlic and turmeric might support cartilage build up but when the synovial fluid is almost dry the lubrication reduces pain and sweeping is more and the bones lose support, rub against each other at the knee joints hence and can start becoming brittle too. In case the person is overweight or obese the symptoms will be more severe. So weight management ( losing weight) can reduce the pain to some extent.

Knee pain with stiffness can worsen due to inflammation, excess weight, and uncontrolled diabetes or thyroid issues. While diet alone cannot correct structural joint gaps, it can definitely help reduce inflammation and support joint health. Include anti-inflammatory foods like turmeric milk (with black pepper), omega-3 sources (flaxseed, chia), seasonal fruits, vegetables, and adequate protein from dal, curd, paneer, and sprouts. Limit sugar, fried foods, packaged snacks, and excessive salt. Ensure good hydration and maintain stable blood sugars. Also encourage gentle activity like slow walking or physiotherapy exercises, as guided by her doctor. Diet can help reduce pain but cannot replace the need for medical or orthopedic management if surgery is eventually required.

Hello, Knee joint gap due to osteoarthritis cannot be reversed through diet alone, but targeted nutrition and lifestyle changes can reduce pain, stiffness, inflammation and help delay surgery—especially with diabetes and thyroid issues. Recommended Diet: • Anti-inflammatory foods: turmeric + black pepper, walnuts, flaxseeds, chia seeds • Calcium & Vit-D sources: ragi, sesame seeds, leafy vegetables • Vitamin-C for joint repair: amla, citrus fruits, guava • Adequate protein: dal, sprouts, curd, paneer (as per diabetes control) • Warm ajwain water in the morning, good hydration Avoid: • Sugar, fried food, bakery items • Excess salt and packaged foods Lifestyle: • Weight management (1 kg loss reduces ~4 kg knee load) • Physiotherapy for quadriceps strengthening • Avoid squatting/cross-leg sitting These measures help improve mobility and reduce symptoms, though they cannot correct the joint gap. For a personalised plan considering her medical history, blood reports and daily routine, you may contact me through Practo.
