Yes, HIP is commonly used in patients who cannot tolerate regular iron salts like ferrous sulphate or fumarate because it is usually gentler on the stomach and better absorbed.
You can take it if prescribed by your doctor.
Heme iron polypeptide (HIP) is a good alternative in patients who cannot tolerate conventional iron (ferrous sulfate/fumarate).
Advantages:
- Better tolerated (less gastritis, nausea)
- Good absorption (less affected by food)
Limitation:
- Usually more expensive
- Evidence is less robust compared to standard iron salts, but clinically useful in intolerance
Next Steps
- Continue heme iron as prescribed
- Recheck:
Hb after 3–4 weeks
Ferritin after 8–12 weeks
If poor response → consider IV iron
Yes, Heme Iron Polypeptide (HIP) is an excellent and highly recommended substitute for you. Unlike conventional non-heme iron (such as Ferrous Sulphate or Fumarate), HIP is absorbed as an intact molecule through a specific pathway in the gut. This means it does not rely on stomach acid for absorption and doesn't irritate the gastric lining. This is why it is much easier on the stomach and significantly reduces common side effects like nausea, bloating, and constipation that you've experienced previously."
Next Steps
You can safely start the HIP tablets as prescribed by your doctor."
"Monitor your tolerance for the first 3-5 days. Most patients with a history of gastric upset find HIP much more comfortable."
"Continue the course for the full duration recommended to ensure your ferritin levels reach the optimal range."
