Fractured 5th metatarsal
Asked for Female, 24 Years I had fractured 5th metatarsal on 11th April 2019 as my foot twisted. It's been 5 weeks of cast (1 week of rough cast to reduce down the swelling and 4 weeks of non weight bearing cast). Further How long should I keep the cast based on my recent x-ray?my doctor suggests I should consider removing the plaster as my ankle would get stiff. Also what are the precautionary measures to be taken after the cast is removed?

These fractures are troublesome to heal and give you grief until and unless you follow strict precautions from your doctor .I did foot and ankle clinics for nearly 2 years in England and I can understand your grief. I would personally operate on them with screws before it is too late though it can be treated nonoperatively followed by long term morbidity.. Normally it should heal by itself at your age group at the same time you have to be patient for next 3 to 4 months avoiding twisting your ankle and walk in straight line bcoz of the direct tendon pull on this fragment . Good luck

Given your age and the fracture pattern, immobilization period is enough. Now cast must be removed and physiotherapy should be started or else you will end up with a stiff ankle.
Next Steps
Remove the cast and do physio. Avoid sport and running for 8 weeks.
Health Tips
you cannot see signs of bony union before 3 months following the fracture. That does not mean bone has not healed, it in the process of consolidating the fracture with calcification.
