Taking a single, accidental 10mg dose of escitalopram after having tapered off it a few months ago is generally not a medical emergency or highly serious for most healthy adults.
Because escitalopram is an SSRI designed for long-term buildup, a single isolated dose will not restart your previous treatment cycle. However, since you missed your intended dose of propranolol, you should monitor yourself closely. Propranolol controls heart rate and anxiety; missing it while introduces a sudden dose of escitalopram might cause mild, temporary side effects.
Next Steps
Over the next 24 to 48 hours, you may experience minor, self-limiting symptoms as the medication clears your system:
-Mild nausea or upset stomach
-Dizziness or lightheadedness
-Temporary spikes in anxiety or restlessness
-Mild headache or drowsiness
Do NOT take an extra dose of propranolol to "make up" for the mix-up unless explicitly directed by your doctor. Check your blood pressure and heart rate if you have a home monitor.
Resume your normal schedule for your prescribed propranolol at your next scheduled dose.
Contact your prescribing doctor or a local pharmacist to inform them of the mistake and ask exactly how to handle the missed propranolol dose based on your specific medical history.
Health Tips
Red Flag Warning: Seek immediate emergency medical care if you experience severe symptoms such as extreme dizziness, fainting, a dangerously slow or rapid heartbeat, severe muscle rigidity, high fever, or confusion.
Separate your medications: To prevent this from happening again, store your old escitalopram in an entirely different cabinet, or safely dispose of leftover pills at a local pharmacy take-back program.
Use a pill organizer: Labeling a weekly pillbox can help ensure you never accidentally grab an old prescription by mistake.
