Enlarged tonsils
Hi , My daughter had her adenoids removed via surgery in 2024 however within a month she developed breathing problem and we found that she developed enlarged tonsils as well. She snores and mouth breath. The tonsils are non infectious but she snores heavily. I am afraid of another surgery for her at this age. Please suggest if any medication can help her.

I understand your worry. She is only 5 years old, and it is natural to feel scared about another surgery. Many parents feel the same. Adenoids and tonsils are both lymphoid tissues. Sometimes after adenoid surgery, the tonsils can enlarge as they start doing more immune work. This does not mean the surgery failed and it is not an emergency. The problem here is not infection, but airway narrowing during sleep. That is why she snores loudly and breathes through the mouth. Medicines can help in mild cases, but they cannot shrink large tonsils permanently. Surgery is considered only if breathing obstruction affects her sleep, growth, or daily activities. Tonsil surgery at this age is very common and safe when done for the right reasons. We do not rush into it.
