Yes, your husband can take the remaining rabies vaccine doses from a private hospital, even if the vaccine brand is different from the one used at the government hospital.
Next Steps
✅ Switching Brands is Acceptable: While it's ideal to complete the series with the same brand, it's not mandatory. WHO guidelines allow for the interchangeability of rabies vaccines as long as they are WHO prequalified or approved by national authorities (like DCGI in India). ✅ Continue on the Same Schedule: Make sure he follows the same dose schedule (e.g., days 0, 3, 7, 14, and 28 for Essen regimen), regardless of brand. ✅ Inform the Private Hospital: Tell the private hospital about: The date and type of previous doses (e.g., Rabishield, Rabipur) That it was a Category 3 bite (important for documentation)
Health Tips
Additional Tips: Save all vaccine records. Ensure he receives full post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) – Rabishield (RIG) was already correctly given for category 3, so just completing the vaccine doses is essential now. He should not skip or delay remaining doses unless medically advised. If you need help tracking the schedule or choosing private hospitals offering rabies vaccines, I can help with that too.

Dear Practo User. Thanks for sending across your query. Yes, your husband can safely take the remaining anti-rabies vaccines from a private hospital if it's more convenient. Mixing vaccine brands like Rabipure and Verorab is acceptable as per WHO guidelines. Prioritize timely doses—consult our clinic for guided, hassle-free completion of the schedule.
