This is a Category 3 bite since there was bleeding, so rabies protection is important even if it’s your pet.
If your dog is vaccinated and healthy for 10 days after the bite, risk is low, but we still don’t ignore it.
For now, start anti rabies vaccine if not already taken no need to delay further.
You can consult me here if you want help with the exact vaccine schedule and next steps.
"A dog bite that results in bleeding is classified as a Category III exposure. Even if the dog is a pet and lives in your home, Rabies protocol must be strictly followed because the virus is fatal once symptoms appear. Relying on a Tetanus shot from last year provides protection against Tetanus, but it does not protect you against Rabies
Next Steps
Immediate Wound Washing: Wash the bite site with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes. This is the most effective way to mechanically wash away the virus from the wound.
Start Anti-Rabies Vaccine (ARV): Visit a clinic immediately to start the 5-dose (or 4-dose ID) schedule. Do not delay the first dose (Day 0).
Rabies Immunoglobulin (RIG): For Category III bites (with bleeding), WHO recommends infiltrating the wound with RIG (Rabies antibodies) along with the first vaccine dose. Consult your doctor about this.
Monitor the Pet: Observe your dog for 10 days. If the dog remains healthy and shows no behavior changes, you can consult your physician about the necessity of the remaining doses.
