Do not give this medication especially to a baby less than 6months of age...not at all recommended. Common cold if not associated with respiratory difficulty is a normal thing and not to be worried about. Just give nasal spray of saline drops liberally multiple times..wipe nose with gauze and use nasal suction bulb if profuse secretions. This should work. Cetirizine at such age may cause drowsiness. Avoid
A 20-day-old baby is a **newborn**, and in this age group we are very cautious with medicines.
**Cetirizine (Zyrtec)** is generally **not routinely recommended in neonates (below 1 month)** unless specifically advised by a pediatrician after examining the baby.
At this age, most “cold and sneezing” is due to:
* Normal newborn nasal congestion
* Physiological sneezing
* Mild viral exposure
Usually treatment is **supportive**, not antihistamines.
What you should do:
* Use normal saline nasal drops (1–2 drops in each nostril, 3–4 times daily)
* Keep baby slightly head-elevated while sleeping
* Continue frequent breastfeeding
* Keep room air clean and not dusty
Do NOT use over-the-counter cold medicines.
Very important:
If the prescribing doctor examined the baby physically and specifically advised a certain dose, confirm the exact dose again before giving.
Go to hospital immediately if:
* Fever (temperature ≥ 100.4°F / 38°C)
* Poor feeding
* Fast breathing
* Chest retractions
* Baby very sleepy or less active
In a 20-day-old, even mild symptoms should be monitored carefully.
If you tell me:
* Is there fever?
* Is baby feeding normally?
* Any breathing difficulty?
I can guide you further.
