Most coughs and colds in children are caused by viral infections and usually improve within 5–7 days without antibiotics. If there is any family history of Allergic rhinitis, Asthma or skin allergies?
Next Steps
Monitor for fever lasting more than 3 days, breathing difficulty, wheezing, ear pain, severe sore throat, or worsening cough. If any of these occur, consult a pediatrician for examination.
Health Tips
Avoid giving over-the-counter combination cold-and-cough tablets without medical advice, as many contain multiple medicines that may not be necessary. Antibiotics are usually not required for a simple cold.

Greetings 11-year-old to ensure the correct diagnosis and safe usage. Over-the-counter options often include antihistamines like cetirizine for a runny nose or paracetamol for associated aches. Avoid combining multiple multi-symptom products, as this can lead to an accidental overdose of active ingredients. For a cough, honey or saline nasal sprays are frequently recommended as safer first-line alternatives to tablets.

For an 11-year-old child weighing 55 kg with runny nose, cough and cold, tablets can be used if she is comfortable swallowing them. Depending on symptoms, Cetirizine 10 mg once daily at night may help with runny nose and sneezing. Ensure adequate fluids, warm liquids and rest. If fever is present, Paracetamol can be given as per weight. Most common colds are viral and improve within a few days without antibiotics.
Next Steps
Monitor for fever, breathing difficulty, wheezing, ear pain, or symptoms lasting more than 10–14 days. Consult a pediatrician if any of these occur.
Health Tips
There is no single tablet that cures a common cold. Treatment is mainly symptomatic, and cough syrups are often not necessary in older children unless specifically advised by a doctor.
