Chest pain during deep breathing
I had dry cough for about 2 months and for the past 4 days, I feel pain in chest during deep breathing or coughing. Initially the pain was from the left bone in my back and a portion of the chest. Only certain points in the chest would pain when I apply pressure like a muscle strain. After 3 days I feel the pain in gradually becoming local after applying heat pad . With the change in the position I feel better. There is some amount of weakness in my left palm. Am I just panicking ?? Should I just give it sometime and take rest? Kindly advice

Sounds like chronic bronchitis! But if there is chest pain on coughing , better to get an Xray or at least let a general physician perform physical examination to rule out any possible diseases!

From your description, this strongly sounds like musculoskeletal chest wall pain (such as costochondritis or muscle strain) related to prolonged coughing. Key reassuring points are: • Pain worsens with deep breathing, coughing, pressure, or certain movements • Pain improves with heat pad and change in position • Pain has become more localized over time These features are not typical of heart or lung emergencies. The mild weakness sensation in the left palm is very commonly seen with muscle tension, anxiety, posture strain, or nerve irritation from the neck/upper back—especially when pain has been ongoing and attention is focused on that area. At this point, panic itself can amplify symptoms, including chest tightness and perceived weakness.
Next Steps
• Give it a few more days of rest and supportive care • Continue local heat application 2–3 times daily • Use paracetamol or an anti-inflammatory if advised by a doctor • Avoid heavy lifting, sudden twisting, or prolonged poor posture • Consult a doctor non-urgently if: • Pain persists beyond 1–2 weeks • Weakness in hand truly worsens or affects function • You develop breathlessness, fever, or non-positional chest pain Emergency evaluation is not indicated right now based on what you’ve described.
Health Tips
• Avoid repeatedly pressing or checking the painful spots • Maintain upright posture; support your back and neck while sitting • Gentle stretching after pain reduces can help • Stay well hydrated and ensure adequate sleep • Remind yourself: pain that is reproducible by touch and position is usually not dangerous You’re not being careless—you’re being cautious, which is understandable when chest pain is involved. From a medical perspective, your symptoms fit a benign and self-limiting condition that often improves with time and rest. If you’d like, an online consultation can help confirm this, guide safe pain relief, and give you peace of mind so you’re not carrying this worry alone.

I understand this is worrying. From what you’ve described — pain on pressing, relief with position/heat pad, and pain with deep breathing/cough — this sounds more like muscle or chest wall strain (costochondritis/intercostal strain), especially after prolonged cough. It doesn’t sound cardiac. The left palm weakness is likely from muscle tension or anxiety.
Next Steps
Take rest, continue warm compress, and you can use a mild pain-reliever if needed. Also treat the cough. If pain doesn’t improve in 3–5 days, or weakness increases, get examined once (ECG + chest check). You can consult me online and I’ll guide you step-by-step.
Health Tips
Avoid heavy lifting, sudden movements. If you get true chest tightness, breathlessness, sweating, or worsening arm weakness — don’t wait, seek care urgently. Otherwise this looks manageable — happy to help further in consultation.
