breastbone (sternum) pain can have a few different causes, depending on how it feels and what brings it on. Some common causes include: Costochondritis — inflammation of the cartilage connecting ribs to the breastbone. Feels like sharp or aching pain, often worse when pressing the area or moving. Muscle strain — from heavy lifting, coughing, or exercise. Heart-related issues — like angina or, rarely, a heart attack (especially if it's a tight, pressure-like pain spreading to the arm, neck, or jaw). Acid reflux/heartburn — which can cause burning chest pain behind the breastbone, often after eating. Anxiety or panic attacks — can cause chest tightness or discomfort.
