When I stopped antidepressants, i lost sleep for 3 days and then when I woke up on the 4th day with little sleep,I developed neck stiffness/cervical spondylosis spasms, headaches, photophobia and sound sensitivity as well. Lost weight since I had gained lot of weight on meds. Also had digestive upset etc. went sleepless for a very long period. Memory affected, and focus affected. For neck stiffness, cervical spondylosis, was suggested physio, but I got okay with alternative medicine. Gained okay weight now, can sleep a bit with meds. Did the neck stiffness, cervical spondylosis, neck spasms affect blood supply to the brain? Is this the cause for insomnia, memory issues or anything to do with the brain or no? Please let me know. Can sleep with meds which had stopped working in between. Severe neck pain and stiffness was there but on examination by ortho, painless ROM.Severe insomnia that was never there earlier and even memory issues that weren't present earlier. Guide correctly please.

I want to acknowledge how much courage it takes to voice these struggles. Often, we treat mental health as a matter of 'willpower,' but as a psychiatrist, I can tell you that what you are experiencing has a real biological and neurological basis.
Your brain, like any other organ, can sometimes struggle to maintain balance under stress. Seeking treatment isn't a sign of failure; it’s a proactive medical decision to regain your quality of life. We can work together to understand the 'why' behind these feelings and find a structured path back to your baseline. You don't have to navigate this alone.

Hi, These symptoms may be related to anxiety and depression. They can also occur due to the sudden stopping of medications, or because of worry and stress related to stopping them. It would be helpful to follow good sleep hygiene practices. Physiotherapy can also support muscle strengthening and improve overall physical well-being.

you should try sleep hygiene. physiotherapy for strengthening of muscles.
When antidepressants are stopped suddenly or without gradual tapering, the body and brain can react strongly. Sleep disturbance, headaches, light and sound sensitivity, digestive upset, and muscle tension are all known to occur during withdrawal or rebound symptoms. Severe lack of sleep itself can then cause memory difficulty, poor focus, neck tension, and increased pain sensitivity. This chain reaction often feels alarming, but it does not usually mean permanent brain damage.
Cervical muscle spasm or spondylosis does not typically reduce blood supply to the brain in a way that causes lasting memory loss. More commonly, sleep deprivation, anxiety, and prolonged stress are responsible for cognitive fog and sensitivity.
Next Steps
To move toward stability, the following steps may help:
- Having a structured psychiatric review to reassess medication strategy and sleep management rather than adjusting on your own
- Working with a mental health professional, especially a therapist, to address anxiety about symptoms and rebuild cognitive confidence
- Prioritising gradual sleep restoration, as cognitive clarity often improves once sleep stabilises
- Continuing appropriate physiotherapy or posture correction, since muscle tension can trigger headaches and discomfort
- Introducing gentle daytime activity and light exposure to support circadian rhythm balance
- Avoiding repeated self-testing of memory, which can worsen anxiety and perceived decline
Health Tips
In most similar cases, memory and focus issues linked to sleep loss and stress are reversible with sustained recovery and proper guidance.
