It sounds like your mother may be experiencing significant anxiety along with perfectionistic tendencies, which can often lead to irritability, low mood, and emotional fluctuations especially in later adulthood. At this age, it’s important not to dismiss this as just “personality” or “habit.” Sudden or worsening anxiety, rigidity, and mood changes can be linked to underlying psychological stress, but also sometimes medical or age-related factors (like hormonal changes, sleep issues, or neurological factors). A proper assessment is important.
Next Steps
She would benefit from a structured psychological evaluation. Therapy (especially CBT-based or supportive therapy) can help her manage anxiety, improve flexibility, and regulate emotions. In some cases, a psychiatrist consultation may also be needed to rule out medical contributors. If you’d like, you can book a session to discuss her case in detail and plan a structured approach.
Health Tips
What you’re describing needing everything perfect, feeling worried, and mood swings often points toward: * Anxiety disorder with high control needs * Possible underlying depression * Low tolerance for uncertainty

It seems to be geriatric anxiety with OCD. It needs to be treated asap otherwise it may get complicated and can affect her personal and social life. It needs to be treated in a holistic approach for complete recovery. It can be well treated with counseling sessions and homeopathic medicine effectively and without any side effects. You need an expert Psychologist who is a good homeopathic physician.
Next Steps
I have been working as a Homeopathic Psychiatrist and Counseling psychologist for the last 17 years of experience. You can contact me through an online appointment for further assistance.

Hey It sounds like your mother is struggling with a mix of anxiety, perfectionism, and emotional overwhelm, which is now affecting her mood and behavior at home. When anxiety becomes chronic, the mind tries to gain control by demanding things to be “perfect,” but this actually increases stress and irritability. Her mood swings and low phases may be signs that she is mentally exhausted and unable to regulate her emotions effectively, rather than intentionally behaving this way. At this stage, what she needs is a safe, non-judgmental space where she can understand her anxiety patterns and learn how to relax control gradually. Therapy can help her build emotional stability, reduce perfectionistic thinking, and improve her overall well-being and relationships. You can support her, but she will benefit most from professional guidance. Take therapy. You can connect with me on nine two six six seven two six zero six five.

You may want to explore geriatric counselling for your mother. Perfection can be a survivor response which her experiences might have led her to learn.

Health Tips
Focus on your own triggers as well. Sometimes if others behaviour is triggering something in you, you might want to explore that instead of building resentment towards the other person.

In situations like this, we focus on supporting and reassuring patients by staying calm, listening carefully, and providing clear guidance. Working in a hospital, we regularly help patients through similar challenges by offering comfort, answering questions, and making sure they feel heard and understood. I can help by providing that same level of care, patience, and support to ensure the patient feels safe and well taken care of.

What you’re describing — anxiety, perfectionism, mood swings — is very common in this age group and very treatable. As a psychologist, I’ve worked with many adults in similar situations. The key is creating a safe space for her, not pushing change.
Next Steps
A proper assessment would help identify what’s driving this. Feel free to reach out to me on Practo for a consultation — happy to guide you both through this.
Health Tips
Don’t frame therapy as “fixing her” — frame it as support. That makes all the difference with anxious individuals.
