Anxiety issues
I have a habit of eating the skin on the side of my nail due to which sometimes there is a bruise also. I have tried to stop this multiple times. I have a habit of talking to myself about anything good or bad when no one is there and sometimes I don't even notice that I have been talking so much to myself. Is this some sign of mental illness??

Hi, It’s a sign of emotional conflict and trauma response. We need the details of your childhood so that we can actually understand the root cause. I would suggest to consult a psychologist if you want to overcome it. Psychoanalytic approach will be helpful. Thanks

Hi How long has it been since you have noticed that you eat the skin on the side of the nail? How long has it been since you have been talking to yourself? It sounds like you are anxious about certain things. It is necessary to determine what is causing you to indulge in certain behaviours. Don’t feel too upset about eating the skin on the side of the nail and also don’t feel upset about talking to yourself. With the help of a psychologist you can work on how you can manage anxiety and feel calm. With the help of a psychologist you can reduce the number of times you eat the skin on the side of the nail and you can also reduce the number of times you talk to yourself. Consult a psychologist and explain about the behaviours in detail.
Next Steps
Consult a psychologist.

Hi.. Everything you said is normal within a limit. We all do these things but when it goes beyond a point it starts falling into the category of mental illnesses/disorders. In fact the increased use of such signs and symptoms develop out of certain issues repressed in one's subconscious/unconscious mind. Sometimes it may be caused by other factors including psychosocial, biological, genetic, environmental, etc. Only after a proper clinical assessment it can be ascertained what is the exact cause. In some cases it may take a longer time to get to the root of such issues. But ultimately with medication and psychotherapy most of such issues can be addressed and relieved.
Next Steps
Consult a Psychologist. CBT along with Lifestyle Changes and Interpersonal Guidance and Counselling is required. Seek Medical Diagnosis from your Psychiatrist. Since you are already on medications (SSRI/sleep).

On the basis of what you have mentioned, giving a diagnosis or coming to conclusion would be unjustified. It’s better to consult a psychologist who would be able to dig deeper in your behaviour and come to a conclusion. It could be a sign of high functioning anxiety too, it’s better to consult a therapist and understand more about your behaviour and work on it.
