Hello,
I need guidance on which psychologist I should consult.
I masturbated intentionally for around 7 years.
For the last 6 years, I have been trying to stop, but I am not successful.
So this problem has been there for almost 13 years in total.
Whole day I can control myself and I don’t even think about it.
The problem happens only at night before sleep.
I was able to quit porn easily, but I cannot stop masturbation.
Willpower works during the day but fails at night.
This habit is causing stress, guilt, and mental exhaustion.
I want proper psychological treatment, not just motivation.
Which psychologist should I meet for this condition?
• Clinical Psychologist or Counselling Psychologist?
• What education / degree should I check before consulting?
•How much experience necessary?
• Should the psychologist have experience in compulsive or addictive behaviors?
Also, approximately how many sessions are usually required for such compulsive behavior?

1. You can go for a counselling psychologist, qualification no issues, try to see the experience level. And believe me, every counselor has their own approach. You will get to know about compatibility after attending the session. Try to find out younger age professionals.
Next Steps
1. Try to understand that, the problem is not masturbation but the stress and guilt feelings associated with that behaviour.

You are on right path. things will get better. find your psychologist soon 😊
This concern looks like a compulsive habit pattern, not just a willpower issue, and it can be treated with proper therapy. You can consult a Clinical Psychologist or an experienced Counselling Psychologist trained in CBT and compulsive/addictive behaviors. Check for a Psychology degree, relevant therapy training, and experience with impulse-control concerns. Improvement is usually seen within 6–12 sessions, depending on individual progress. The right therapist will focus on triggers, habit change, and emotional regulation — not just motivation.
Hi,
I hear you are struggling with stopping masturbation especially at night. I also understand that you've noticed that this behaviour has gone out of control. The compulsivity and addictive nature of this habit may be serving a purpose of temporary relief. Sometimes when something "works" to provide comfort and relief can become a tool for us to use again and again. It's common for many men to funnel all emotional unfulfilled needs into sex (as they are socialised to only have sexual needs and not emotional)
So stress management can unintentionally rely on sexual release. Many men start to rely on masturbation as coping and struggle getting out of this until it becomes compulsive. It's a hard place to be. But as with all psychological issues this one also has a way out. With support and your commitment to do the work recovery is possible.

You can look for a Psychologist who works with sexual issues. Firstly, you need to check if you fall under the bracket of addiction and then start with the treatment. Normally, addictions have an underlying reasons and that needs to be uncovered for modifying a behaviour.

Hi,
For your condition, a Clinical Psychologist or a Psychotherapist with experience in behavioral addictions or compulsive behaviors would be suitable. Look for someone with a master's or doctorate in psychology (e.g., MSc or PhD in Clinical Psychology). Experience in treating compulsive or addictive behaviors is important. Typically, 8-12 sessions may help, but it varies based on individual progress. It's best to consult a qualified mental health professional for personalized treatment.
