Vocal Cord Paralysis

Asked for Female, 56 Years

Today after endoscopy ,my mother has been diagnosed with left side vocal cord paralysis. We have been adviced for CT scan report. The endoscopy report says that there is no infection and idiopathic quotient involved. So what could be the cause for this paralysis?

Most of the unilateral vocal cord paralysis are idiopathic if there is no history of and neck surgery. Other causes include any lesions related to lungs, mediastinum, and some lesions of heart such as mitral stenosis. CT SCAN required to rule out such causes. Idiopathic palsy is usually diagnosis by excluding all other causes. Usually its harmless and slowly other vocal cord will compensate and voice will become almost normal

You doctor is right in ordering for a CT scan of neck & chest. Left sided vocal cord palsy could be caused by some pathology/malignancy in chest or lower neck pulling on the recurrent laryngeal nerve which is causing the paresis/palsy. The CT scan will definitely reveal the pathology.
