Vertical Line on index finger
Hi,
I just noticed a vertical line on my index finger. Is it something serious? Online says it could be melanoma. I am very worried.

Looking at your photo, this is a pale/whitish longitudinal nail ridge â not a dark stripe. Melanoma (subungual) presents as a dark brown or black band, often with pigment spreading to the skin around the nail (Hutchinson's sign). What you have looks like benign longitudinal ridging (onychorrhexis), which is very common, especially with age or minor repetitive trauma to the nail matrix. Not something to worry about based on the photo.

No urgent action needed. However, if the line turns dark (brown/black) or pigment spreads to the skin around the nail, see a dermatologist promptly for evaluation.

Though there are several pathological conditions which can have a single dark black line on nail..
But as per your image it's more of giving a sign of any local trauma bcz it's reddish brown in colour...
If it is recently produced by any unknowing trauma, then don't worry it will be healed by it's own bcz nail bed has good blood supply
