Compression stockings are mandatory, but it should not be loose , it should create adequate compression and made as per measurement of your lower limb.
At night u can take it off , use pillow below your leg for limb elevation.
If varicose in thigh , use above knee stockings.
Next Steps
Stockings comes in grade wise grade 1, II , III as per severity of varicose.
Crepe will not provide such compression.

The duration can vary as per symptoms severity. As in some cases it takes few weeks to show any improvements. Crepe bandages can be used but you have to cover it till the knee joint which is quite tough doing everyday. Hence stockings are used. Now a days many new methods (endovascular) are being used to treat these conditions like lasers, sclerotherapy etc.
