Taken Mahalakshmivilas while lactating
My wife has accidentally taken only 2 tab of ayurvedic medicine mahalakshmi vilas ras for cold, and it says it contains heavy metals (bhasm ). Now should she stop breast feeding my 4 month old altogether or she can continue doing breast feeding ? Its been 3 days already of no breast feeding. Child has been already taking combination feed with majorly formula. Please suggest!

I understand your concern — **Mahalakshmi Vilas Ras** is a classical Ayurvedic formulation that can contain **bhasmas** (calcined metals/minerals like gold, silver, mercury, copper, etc.) in very small, purified amounts, *if prepared authentically*. Here’s the situation broken down: --- ### **1. Risk to the baby** * The amount of bhasma that passes into breast milk after **just 2 doses** is expected to be extremely small — usually negligible compared to chronic or high-dose intake. * Toxicity concerns generally arise with **long-term daily use**, poor-quality or adulterated products, or very high doses. * It’s already been **3 days** since she took them — any trace in her bloodstream (and thus milk) would now be extremely minimal, since these preparations are usually metabolized/excreted or bound in tissues within 1–2 days. --- ### **2. Breastfeeding safety** * In most cases like this, **there is no need to permanently stop breastfeeding** after a couple of doses, especially when the exposure was brief. * Since she is otherwise healthy and the baby has been taking combination feed, she can **resume breastfeeding now** — especially because breast milk provides immune and nutritional benefits that outweigh such a small, one-time exposure. * If she’s anxious, she could **resume gradually** — start with 1–2 feeds a day while observing the baby for any unusual symptoms (vomiting, lethargy, rash, diarrhea), though such symptoms are *very* unlikely from this scenario. --- ### **3. What to do now** * **No further Mahalaxmi Vilas Ras** while breastfeeding. * Stick to safer, metal-free options for cold in lactating mothers — like **Sitopaladi Churna + honey**, **Tulsi tea**, or **Pippali powder in warm water**. * Keep the baby well hydrated and continue combination feeding as needed. * If any unusual baby symptoms appear (unlikely), consult a pediatrician — but in most similar cases, no intervention is required. --- ✅ **Bottom line:** After 3 days from just 2 tablets, the risk is negligible. She can safely resume breastfeeding now. The benefits of restarting outweigh the minimal, one-time exposure risk. --- If you want, I can give you a **list of completely safe Ayurvedic remedies for cold** that she can take during breastfeeding, so you don’t have to worry about heavy metals again. Would you like me to prepare that list? Advice- self medication is hazardous, always consult ayurvedic doctor before taking ayurvedic medicine. Consult me personally for details.

Firstly no need to worry. People have just demonized ayurvedic ras compounds way beyond proportion when there are other toxic components in conventional over the counter medications that are way more hazardous than these so called heavy metals. I feel really sad for this situation though. That being said, please be advised that if this was self medication then it definitely needs to be stopped. The mother should follow HAIP DIET so that these infections can be avoided. There is no need to fear about breast feeding and unnecessarily depriving the child of actual nutrients and giving the. Child  chemical laden formulas. So please be wise enough to throw out the formulas and not stop breast feeding.

Right now happened is happened.... No need to worry much.... It doesn't give any sideeffects or cause harm to the body or children. Continue feeding without any hesitation or doubt.... If u r having any such problem.... Use Herbal preparations by contacting a ayurvedic doctor...

Mahalakshmi Vilas Ras does contain bhasmas (purified heavy metals) like mercury or arsenic in very small, traditionally processed quantities, but safety during breastfeeding is not established. Since your wife took only 2 tablets and it’s already been 3 days, the risk to your baby is likely minimal, as most of the medicine would have been metabolized and excreted by now. Suggested action: She can now resume breastfeeding, especially since the baby is primarily formula-fed and the exposure would be extremely small. Watch the baby for any unusual symptoms (vomiting, lethargy, feeding difficulty, rash). Avoid any further use of heavy-metal-containing Ayurvedic medicines during lactation. If you wish, I can give you a safe Ayurvedic alternative for cold that’s suitable even while breastfeeding.
