Stray dog bite
Hi. I am from Bangalore. I got bitten by a stray dog when I was going on a bike late night on Friday at 1.25 am. I bought a one litre water and washed the wound area at 1:50 am. It's in my left leg with 1-2 wounds and few scratches. I visited a nearby small clinic at 2:30 am. Doctor prescribed tt and rabivax s on deltoid. But nurse did mistake by injecting both in gluteal region at 3 am. As i was not aware of these medical terms. I just went home and washed again with hand wash and water for 5 mins at 4 am and slept. Later I was checking in Google and came to know that the injection should be given only on hand but it was given to me in wrong place in buttocks. I visited Kim's hospital in the morning 11:30 am. They said it's should be considered as category 3. They again started rabivax s on my hand as day 0 . It's scheduled as Day 0,3,7,14,28. Also they gave rabisheld near my wound area. As it's fatal disease I'm very stressed and depressed on what might happen in next few days.

Please don't panic — you are now on the correct and complete post-exposure prophylaxis protocol, and that is what matters most. The first clinic's mistake of injecting in the gluteal region was a real error (gluteal injections give poor immune response), but Kim's hospital did exactly the right thing by restarting the vaccine from Day 0 in the deltoid. The RIG (Rabisheld) given near the wound is the most critical component for Category 3 bites and has been correctly administered. Your wound washing was also done well. You are now fully protected as long as you complete all 5 doses on schedule (Day 0, 3, 7, 14, 28) without missing any. Rabies post-exposure prophylaxis when given correctly like yours is now is virtually 100% effective. The wound is in your leg, not near the head/neck, which means the incubation period is longer — giving the vaccine time to work. Please stop worrying and focus on completing the course.
Next Steps
Complete all 5 rabies vaccine doses without missing any (Day 0, 3, 7, 14, 28). Keep the wound clean. No further action needed — you are on the right protocol.

Taking antirabies vaccine in gluteal region, is less effective as compared to that taken in deltoid region. But since it is cat.3 bite, I.e. less risky and injection already taken do not worry. Continue the schedule.
