Hello Smegma is a normal, white, cheese-like substance made of shed skin cells and natural secretions. It often collects under the foreskin in baby boys and does not indicate infection or poor hygiene. At this age, the foreskin is usually still adherent to the glans, and forcefully retracting it can cause pain, tears, or even scarring. Do NOT forcibly retract the foreskin. During bathing, simply clean the external part of the penis with warm water. You may gently retract the foreskin just enough to clean what is visible, only if it moves easily—never force it. As the child grows, the foreskin will gradually start to separate on its own, usually by age 3–5 years or later.
Next Steps
Daily gentle cleaning during bath is enough. No creams or antiseptics are needed unless signs of infection (redness, swelling, foul-smelling discharge). If redness, pain during urination, or ballooning of foreskin is noticed, consult a pediatrician.
Health Tips
Forceful retraction can cause microtears and lead to future complications like phimosis.

Do nothing special — it is self-cleaning. • Just clean the genital area gently with warm water during the bath. • Never forcibly retract the foreskin in boys — it can cause injury or scarring
Next Steps
See your pediatrician if: • There’s redness, swelling, or pain in the area • The smegma is foul-smelling or greenish/yellow (could indicate infection) • There are signs of urinary discomfort, fever, or discharge from the tip of the penis/vulva
Health Tips
Smegma is not an infection, not poor hygiene, and does not require treatment or ointments. It’s a normal part of genital maturation in children.

It's normal; gently cleanse with water and avoid harsh soaps, as that would be helpful.
