Sleep problem
Hi, my daughter just turned 16 and she's been having trouble sleeping since last 3 weeks, everytime she sleeps she wakes up to saying she felt a type of vibration around her chest region during the course of the sleep and that she could feel her heart beat (meaning she could hear her heart beat faster or hear the sound of her heart) in sleep. She wakes up in the morning feeling nauseated, she's also been saying sometimes she feels uncomfortable in the right part of her upper abdomen. We've gotten tests done related to thyroid and also have gotten done ecg. Every report came out absolutely normal. These days she gets scared to sleep cause of the sensations she feels during her sleep. What could be the reason behind my daughter going through these things? Please let me know, I would be really grateful. Thank you so much.

The kind of symptoms she is going through, we call it palpitation. The causes of palpitation are many, usually it is due to stress, anxiety and phobia. The other causes are cardiac diseases, thyroid problems and high BP. Even iron deficiency anemia can cause palpitation. So there are many causes of it. Consult a physician for evaluation.

Anxiety disorder is one possibility, but before considered we should always rule out any cardiac problems. The sensation of feeling ones heart beat is called as palpitations, which can arise due conduction problem in the heart. This palpitations start suddenly and may resolve to normal rhythm on it own. ECG cannot diagnose this problem. If cardiac work up is normal then anxiety disorder and night terrors could be the possibility which can be easily treated by a clinical psychologist by psychotherapy.
Next Steps
Kindly meet a cardiologist with specialisation in electrophysiology, he may ask you to get a test called holter monitoring which has higher chances to catch the palpitations and by seeing the type of palpitations they can provide you specific treatment.
Health Tips
Until cardiac workup is not done avoid any intense physical activity. And in case of such palpitations go to the nearest emergency and take an ecg at the time of event.
