My mother has been experiencing recurrent knee pain (right) for nearly a year. About two months ago, she slipped and fell, after which we got an X-ray done (attached). The doctor advised rest and the use of a crepe bandage for a few weeks. However, she continues to have daily knee pain. Could you kindly review the X-ray and guide us on the possible cause and the treatment options available

Thank you for sharing the X-ray.
Based on the X-ray, I do not see any obvious fracture (broken bone) or major injury from the fall. However, there are signs of age-related wear and tear (arthritis) in the knee joint, which may be contributing to her pain. Since she has been experiencing knee pain for almost a year, it is likely that the problem existed before the fall and may have worsened afterwards.
Next Steps
An X-ray can only show the bones. It cannot show injuries to the cartilage, meniscus (knee cushion), ligaments, or other soft tissues. If the pain is persistent, especially while walking, climbing stairs, squatting, or if there is swelling, locking, or a feeling that the knee is giving way, an MRI may be needed for further evaluation.
For now, I would advise an orthopaedic consultation, knee-strengthening exercises under the guidance of a physiotherapist, avoiding excessive strain on the knee, and using pain medication only as advised by a doctor. Maintaining a healthy weight can also help reduce stress on the knee joint.
