Rabies Shot again?
Hi Doctor, I took anti-rabies booster doses on 14th and 17th March 2026 along with a tetanus shot on 14th March, and today (31st March) my pet cat (last vaccinated in Dec 2024, currently normal) bit and scratched me during a fight with another cat....causing a bleeding puncture wound (poked hole); I immediately washed with soap and applied Betadine—do I need additional anti-rabies vaccination or am I already protected?

Based on the history provided, you are fully protected and do not require any additional anti-rabies vaccination at this time. Clinical Reasoning: Recent Booster Protection: You received booster doses on March 14th and 17th, 2026. According to WHO and National Rabies Control Program (NRCP) guidelines, if a person has completed a documented full course or booster course within the last 3 months, they do not need further shots for a new exposure. Current Immune Status: Your body currently has peak levels of neutralizing antibodies from the shots you took just two weeks ago. These will effectively neutralize any potential virus from the current scratch. Pet Status: Since the cat is a pet, is currently "normal," and has a history of vaccination (even if it's from 2024), the risk is significantly lower. However, the medical protocol relies primarily on your recent vaccination status. Recommended Actions: Wound Care: You have already done the most important step by washing with soap and applying Betadine. Continue to keep the puncture wound clean and dry. Observe the Cat: Monitor your pet cat for 10 days. If the cat remains healthy and behaves normally during this period, it further confirms there is zero risk. Tetanus: You received a tetanus shot on March 14th, so you are fully protected against tetanus as well. Summary: No further injections are needed. Your recent booster course provides 100% protection for the current incident.
