Precautions after tympanoplasty
Hello Most Respected ENT Surgeons here, My father, aged 74 has been advised for tympanoplasty. He develops infections repeatedly, has pus discharge and thereby can't use a hearing aid due to the discharge. I would be extremely grateful to get guidance for cautions post tympanoplasty. What I am most worried about is if he sneezes in the immediate days post the surgery, what complications can he develop ? Warmest Regards to all the ENT Surgeons here 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Hi Owing to the age of your father, I would want to look at his CT scan prior to deciding for tympanoplasty . Also would want to know his otoscopy findings. Infection due to hearing aid is also common. It need not be related to middle ear & in that case he would not benefit from surgery May i know his indication for hearing aid?

Hello , main complications post tympanoplasty are graft failure(i.e. failure of surgery), ear discharge. There are some precautions to be followed in post operative for success and healing
Next Steps
Keep ear dry. No amount of water should enter the operated ear. Take all the prescribed medicines Avoid straining , lifting heavy weights. Sneeze with open mouth Wear a mask if going to crowded places or avoid contact with a patient having cold and flu as episodes of upper respiratory tract infection till few weeks after surgery are the main cause of failure of surgery and ear discharge post tympanoplasty

Hi Your concerns are genuine but once your father will undergo the procedure the operating surgeon will guide you with respect to management. Alot of factors come into play as only the operating surgeon knows the kind of disease your father has and remedies available for him.

Hey, its good you are planning his surgery just post op the precautions is to avoid food and environment in which he can catch cold , keep the operated ear dry, avoid lifting heavy objects and do not strain while defecating and dont use straw . He would be requiring a course antibiotics and antihistaminics and antibiotic ear drops prescribed by the surgeon and concerned surgeon will guide you more accurately depending the disease noted during the surgery.
