Pigmentation on lips
Hey, I’ve noticed that my lips have become quite dark recently. I’m a bit concerned and wanted to understand what could be the reason behind it. I don’t smoke or vape at all, so I’m unsure why this is happening. Could you please help me with possible causes?

Darkening of lips (lip hyperpigmentation) can happen due to multiple reasons even if you don’t smoke. Common causes include: • Sun exposure → UV rays stimulate melanin production • Lip licking / dryness → chronic irritation leads to pigmentation • Allergic reactions → lipsticks, toothpaste, lip balms (especially flavored/fragrant ones) • Caffeine intake → excess tea/coffee can contribute over time • Nutritional deficiencies → especially Vitamin B12, iron • Hormonal changes → common at your age • Dehydration • Post-inflammatory pigmentation → after chapping or irritation Next Steps • Start using a lip balm with SPF 30+ daily • Switch to a bland, fragrance-free lip balm (avoid tinted/flavored products) • Stay well hydrated • Reduce excess tea/coffee intake • Consider basic blood tests: • Hemoglobin • Vitamin B12 • If pigmentation persists → consult a dermatologist for: • Mild depigmenting creams (like kojic acid, vitamin C-based) • Chemical peels (if needed) Helpful Tips / Word of Caution • Avoid DIY harsh scrubs (can worsen pigmentation) • Don’t pick or peel dry lips • Results take time (4–8 weeks minimum) • If pigmentation is sudden, severe, or associated with other symptoms → rule out systemic causes Kindly consult with me via Practo for detailed evaluation and treatment
