Persistent dry mouth since 6 weeks
I am having persistent dry mouth since last 6 weeks. All my reports are normal like sugar, thyroid. I drink 2-3 litres of water everyday. I don't take any medications. I don't mouth breathe. I visited several ENTs and physicians and they didn't see any issues with the glands. Some physicians say it might be due to stress. I am unable to find root cause for this and this is making me very stressed.

I hear you. Persistent dry mouth with *normal reports* is incredibly frustrating—and the uncertainty itself can make symptoms spiral. Let me walk you through this calmly and logically, without scary assumptions. You’re not missing something obvious, and this **does not point to cancer or a serious gland disease** given what you’ve already checked. 🤍 --- ## First: what your story already tells me (important) * Age: **27** * Duration: **6 weeks** * Sugar, thyroid: **normal** * ENT exam + salivary glands: **normal** * Water intake: **adequate** * No meds, no mouth breathing * High stress + health anxiety 👉 This pattern strongly suggests **functional / stress-related salivary dysfunction**, not structural disease. --- ## The most common overlooked cause (in people like you) ### 🧠 **Stress → sympathetic overdrive** When stress is prolonged: * Your nervous system stays in *fight-or-flight* * Blood flow to salivary glands reduces * Saliva becomes **thick / scanty** * Mouth *feels* dry even if glands are fine This is called **stress-induced xerostomia** or **functional dry mouth**. 🔁 The cruel loop: > Dry mouth → worry → more stress → more dryness --- ## Why doctors couldn’t “find” anything Because: * Glands are structurally normal * No infection, diabetes, thyroid issue * No medication side effects This is a **regulatory problem**, not a disease. --- ## Important reassurance (please read carefully) 🚫 This is **NOT**: * Oral cancer * Salivary gland failure * Sjögren’s syndrome (you’d have dry eyes, joint pain, fatigue, abnormal labs) * Dehydration 6 weeks of isolated dry mouth with normal tests does **not** fit serious pathology. --- ## Ayurveda explanation (simple & accurate) This is typically: * **Vata + Pitta aggravation** * **Rasa dhatu kshaya (functional, not structural)** * **Manasika nidana** (mind–body link) Ayurveda fully recognizes stress-based dryness. --- ## What actually helps (not guesswork) ### 🌿 1️⃣ Stop over-drinking water Counterintuitive, but important. ❌ Constant sipping washes saliva reflex ✅ Drink **warm water**, in proper intervals * 1 glass every 60–90 minutes * Not every 10–15 minutes --- ### 🌿 2️⃣ Oral stimulation (very effective) Do these 3 daily: * Chew **fennel seeds (saunf)** after meals * Keep **a clove** in the mouth for 5 minutes once daily * Oil pulling with **sesame oil** (5–7 minutes morning) These wake up salivary reflexes. --- ### 🌿 3️⃣ Diet tweaks (to rebuild moisture) Increase: * Ghee (1–2 tsp/day) * Warm milk (if tolerated) * Rice, dal, vegetables * Coconut (small amounts) Avoid: * Excess tea/coffee * Very spicy, dry, fried foods * Alcohol * Late nights --- ### 🌿 4️⃣ Medicines (gentle, safe) You don’t need heavy drugs. **Option A (simple):** * *****(*) powder** * ¼ tsp, suck slowly, twice daily **Option B (if stress is dominant):** * *****churna** * ½ tsp at night with warm milk or water (Choose one, not everything.) --- ### 🌿 5️⃣ Nervous system reset (this is key) Daily: * **Anulom Vilom** – 10 minutes * Before sleep: slow breathing (4–6 rhythm) This directly improves saliva flow. --- ## What NOT to do * Don’t keep checking tongue/mouth * Don’t google symptoms repeatedly * Don’t jump to autoimmune fear without signs * Don’t use artificial saliva sprays long-term --- ## When to investigate further (only if these appear) ⚠️ Come back for evaluation if you develop: * Dry eyes * Joint pain * Recurrent mouth ulcers * Parotid swelling * Weight loss or fever Right now, **you don’t have these**. --- ## Honest timeline With stress regulation + oral stimulation: * Improvement usually starts in **2–3 weeks** * Full resolution in **4–8 weeks** Your glands are not damaged—they’re just “switched down.” --- If you want, tell me: * Sleep quality * Bowel habits * Whether mouth dryness is worse at night or day I’ll refine this precisely for you. You’re not alone in this—and you’re not broken. 🌱 Advice- self medication is hazardous, always consult ayurvedic doctor before taking ayurvedic medicine. Consult me personally for details

Hello. I am Dr Dixsaya, an Ayurvedic Psychiatrist. You have mentioned your symptoms and certain practices that are contradictory to the disorder. It's good that you are concerned about your health and taking steps in the right directions. Doctors do various blood tests and other investigations to exclude possible diseases. So it would be easier and faster to diagnose if you can share the previous test results. I would like to know if you also have dry eyes. Moreover, As a doctor, I strongly believe that the symptoms point towards Sjogren's syndrome, an auto immune disorder that targets moisture producing glands. So first we have to test if it's Sjogren's. If not, this might be due to stress. In either case, please feel free to contact me.
Next Steps
Tests to be done: 1. CBC, 2. ANA, 3. Rheumatoid factor, 4. CRP, 5. IgA, IgM and IgA.
Health Tips
Water is not the only thing needed to moisturise, you can 1. Apply plain coconut oil (without added perfumes) over the face, 2. Gargle with oil. 3. Continue drinking water

Persistent dry mouth in your condition is mainly due to three factors: Lack of adequate sleep Excessive screen time Excess body heat Medical tests may not be helpful in this situation. Improvement depends mainly on proper diet (Ahara) and lifestyle practices (Vihara).

I understand that you've been experiencing persistent dry mouth for the past 6 weeks, and it's causing you significant stress. I'm sorry to hear that you're going through this. Given that your reports for sugar and thyroid are normal, and you're drinking 2-3 liters of water daily without any medications or mouth breathing, it's indeed puzzling. Although several ENTs and physicians haven't found any glandular issues, and some suggest stress could be a factor, it's essential to investigate further to determine the underlying cause. To help narrow down the possible causes, could you please provide more information: 1. Do you experience any other symptoms like taste changes, oral discomfort, or difficulty swallowing? 2. Have you recently changed your diet, environment, or lifestyle habits? 3. Have you undergone any dental treatments or procedures recently? 4. How would you describe your stress levels and management techniques? Considering your condition, I would recommend: 1. *Oral examination* to assess salivary gland function and oral health. 2. *Saliva tests* to evaluate salivary flow and composition. 3. *Stress management* techniques like meditation or counseling to alleviate potential stress-related factors. 4. *Symptom management* with saliva substitutes or stimulants if necessary. It would be best to consult a specialist, possibly an oral medicine specialist or a physician experienced in managing xerostomia (dry mouth), to get a comprehensive evaluation. I hope we can identify the cause and find a suitable solution for your dry mouth issue. Looking forward to your response. Best regards, Dr Piyush Juneja
