Post POP stiffness.
Physiotherapy: range of motion exercise of knee, ultrasonics
Supplementation of vit d and calcium in body
Make sure fracture has healed and there is no step in the fracture as this fracture is entirely in the joint

every fracture creates muscle weakness after removal of POP as it remains immobilzed for a long time and pain, stiffness are also because of this. it causes limp in walking as well as lack of co-ordination lack of joint range
(full bending and straightening of the knee).
Next Steps
go for physitherapy..ultrasonic therapy for healing, tens for muscle relaxation and wax therfapy for reducing inflammation may required . take rest. then the exercises are to be done and very much important(strengthening+stretching+co-ordination).
Health Tips
at home: give rest to the knee, avoid full weight bearing to the injured knee and hot water fomentation and some painkiller gel are temporarily helpful.
Dear friend
Tell your mom to keep doing exercises and walking as pain usually takes some time to go.
In the evening do some hot fomentatio. This will help in reducing the amount of pain.
Avoid sitting Cross legged.
Avoid Squatting-
Quadriceps Exercises- Lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain.
Core Strengthening Exercise- Straight Leg Raised With Toes Turned Outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day.
To your question exercise is the only answer... if she will do exs regularly like knee strengthening , isometric quadriceps , hamstring curls , try to bend the knee...such type of exercises will help you get the strength back... this will take around 6 weeks to 8 weeks to get proper strength...get well soon take care...
For elderly people, pain has to be managed first to motivate them to keep doing their regular exercises.
So you can use hot towel fomentation for her pain relief or another option is take her to some physiotherapist for ultrasound sittings which will help her in pain relief. and yes Exercises are the mainstay for long term relief and strengthening of the joint. So encourage her to do it regularly.
In addition , Gait Training can be useful to improve her walking.
I am assuming that the fracture has united in a correct position. The pain in the knee can be due to muscle weakness. This can be improved by doing exercises. Usually in a healthy person it will take around 6 months.
