Panic Attacks
My boyfriend has had an episode of severe panic attack. The following  symptoms and things that have come up since the past 3 days: Sleeplessness,Intake of marijuana, sudden behaviour change, life history playing like a movie in head, turning violent at times, increased heartbeat, mistaking people for someone else, crying suddenly, feeling of guilt and asking for forgiveness. Unemployed since the last 2 years, under constant pressure to find a job, failed marriage 2 years back, has a history of sexual abuse and emotional abuse in childhood, seeks sexual pleasures out of committed relationship repeatedly, lies about trivial things, pretends to be someone he is not. Had a similar episode 5 years back. But nothing after that apart from occasional angry outbursts. What should be done at the earliest so that the problem does not escalate. What kind of mental health professional should we take him to?

I agree with Dr. Shabeeba’s views. Please visit a psychiatrist as soon as possible for a thorough evaluation because there seem to a lot of factors contributing to the current situation. In addition please have him visit a therapist/ counsellor who can help him deal better with current stressors as well as deal with the past emotional trauma.

I understand your concern. However more clarity is needed regarding his problem to decide on severity of the condition. Marijuana affects the nervous system which has the ability to cause all sorts of problems including depression, anxiety, panic, psychosis or even dementia. I suggest you consult a psychiatrist for his detailed evaluation for appropriate treatment, so that dysfunction due to the same can be reduced and his quality of life will improve. His personality traits need to be assessed as well. If based at Delhi then aiims is the best option. Some counselling sessions along with medical help might be useful for him. I would also be more than happy to help you with that if you are looking for further online assistance. Discussions will be held confidential. You can directly consult with me through Practo as needed. Online chat consultation is available.
