Taking calcium alone won't suffice for osteoporosis. Your mother would need adequate sunlight exposure to increase her vitamin D levels so that the calcium that is taken as a supplement is absorbed. One way to reduce the gastritis is to chose a calcium supplement which gets absorbed easily and faster in the stomach. Foods rich in calcium include milk and milk products, green leafy vegetables and seeds.
