My partner has been diagnosed with Acute HIV 1
infection few days back. He had been seeing symptoms like rashes on feet, palms, swollen nodes, extreme fatigue, legs and shoulders joint pain swelling for the last few weeks. The last sexual activity was in November.
I do not have any symptoms, though experiencing mild cold and runny nose for like few days now. I have taken HIV 1 and 2 antibody tests ( results aren't out yet). Please explain what are the chances of me getting infected. Please explain the window cycle and if it is possible to be asymptomatic for me?

I’m really sorry you’re going through this — it’s completely understandable to feel anxious in this situation.
Yes, it is possible to be asymptomatic, especially in early HIV infection. Many people do not develop clear symptoms. Your mild cold/runny nose is not specific for HIV.
Regarding the window period:
• Antibody tests can be negative in the first 2–6 weeks after exposure
• By 6 weeks, most infections are detected
• A repeat test at 6 weeks and again at 3 months gives clarity
• If available, an HIV RNA / PCR test can detect infection much earlier
Since your last exposure was in November, the upcoming results will be very informative.
Next Steps
• Wait for the current test results
• Plan repeat testing as advised
• Practice protected sex until status is fully clear
Health Tips
If you’d like, we can discuss your timeline, test options, and next steps in detail and take this one step at a time.
Your partner’s recent diagnosis of acute (early) HIV is serious, but modern treatment makes it very manageable — he can live a long, healthy life with medicine.
Your symptoms (just mild cold and runny nose) are very common and most likely not related to HIV. Acute HIV usually causes stronger symptoms (high fever, big rash on palms/soles, very tired, swollen glands all over, joint pain) — not just a light cold.
It’s possible to have HIV and feel completely normal (no symptoms) in the early stage — about 10–40% of people do. So we cannot say “I feel okay = I am negative”. Testing is the only way to know for sure.
Next Steps
1. Wait for your HIV 1 & 2 antibody test result (you already did it — good job).
• If exposure was in November (~2 months ago), this test is usually reliable now.
2. For extra peace of mind, ask the doctor for an HIV RNA test (viral load test) right now — it can detect HIV as early as 10–14 days after exposure and is very accurate.
3. If both tests are negative → repeat one more time at 3 months (90 days) from last exposure — this is final confirmation (though very rarely needed with modern tests).
4. Go together to an HIV specialist or infectious disease doctor soon:
• Your partner needs to start treatment quickly (ART pills) — it lowers his viral load fast, protects his health, and makes transmission to you almost zero (U=U = undetectable = untransmittable).
• They can explain your risk exactly (depends on type of sex, condom use, etc.)
Health Tips
• Until tests are confirmed negative, use condoms every time (or avoid sex if possible) to stay safe.
• Your mild cold is probably just a normal virus — rest, drink water, eat well.
• Don’t panic if you read scary things online — most people in your situation test negative, especially with precautions.
• Talk openly with each other — this is stressful, but support helps a lot. Counseling is available at HIV clinics if needed.
You are doing the right thing by getting tested quickly. Once results come and treatment starts for your partner, things become much safer and calmer.
