Edema and blood test
I've been experiencing intermittent mild pitting edema in both legs for the past month. My doctor recommended CBC, KFT, and LFT tests, and l've attached the LFT and KFT reports. Could you please review them and let me know if there are any concerning findings or potential underlying conditions that need attention? I was unable to attach my CBC report as it exceeded the photo limit, but l'd like to share the key findings with you. My CBC results showed that my hemoglobin (Hb), red blood cell (RBC), and white blood cell (WBC) counts are all within normal ranges. However, my erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) is elevated at 44.

Hello, Intermittent mild pitting edema in both legs can have several possible causes, ranging from benign to more concerning conditions. Based on your test results: Creatinine (0.47) and Urea (12) – These are within normal limits, suggesting good kidney function. ESR (44) – Elevated ESR indicates some underlying inflammation but is nonspecific. Possible Causes to Consider: Nutritional Deficiencies – Low protein levels (hypoalbuminemia) can cause mild edema. A serum albumin test may help. Venous Insufficiency – Prolonged standing/sitting, varicose veins, or poor circulation could be contributing factors. Cardiac or Liver Issues – Though less likely, an echocardiogram or liver function test (LFT) may be needed if symptoms persist or worsen. Inflammatory or Autoimmune Conditions – Given the elevated ESR, conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus should be ruled out if you have joint pain or other systemic symptoms. What You Can Do: Keep your legs elevated when resting. Stay hydrated and reduce excess salt intake. If swelling worsens, persists, or is accompanied by shortness of breath, fatigue, or significant joint pain, consult a physician for further evaluation.
Next Steps
A detailed clinical examination and additional tests (CBC, LFT, urine protein, and thyroid function) may be helpful if symptoms persist. Hope this helps!
