Do I need to take tetanus?
I got a cut around my neck while getting my hair cut with blade at a barber shop on 30th May 2026, it was bleeding. Do I need to take a tetanus shot? The last time I took a single dose of tetanus vaccine was in January 2026.

Physician’s opinion: Based on what you’ve described: * You sustained a small bleeding cut from a barber’s blade on 30 May 2026. * You received a tetanus-containing vaccine dose in January 2026, about 5 months ago. You do not need another tetanus shot for this injury. For wound management, a tetanus booster is generally recommended only if: * The wound is contaminated or high-risk and * More than 5 years have passed since the last tetanus vaccine, or * The person’s vaccination status is unknown or incomplete. Since you received a tetanus vaccine very recently, your protection against tetanus should be adequate. What you should do now * Wash the area thoroughly with soap and water if you haven’t already. * Keep the wound clean and monitor for signs of infection: * Increasing redness * Swelling * Warmth * Pus discharge * Fever One additional consideration: blood-borne infections When a cut occurs with a barber’s blade, many people worry about infections such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, and HIV. The actual risk is generally very low, especially if: * A new disposable blade was used. * There was no visible contamination with another person’s blood. However, if you are uncertain whether a fresh blade was used, it is worth checking your Hepatitis B vaccination status. If you have completed the Hepatitis B vaccine series, you are well protected against Hepatitis B. Seek medical attention promptly if: * The wound becomes infected. * The cut was deep and may require closure. * You know or strongly suspect that a previously used blade was involved and you are concerned about blood-borne infection exposure. In summary: For tetanus specifically, no additional tetanus injection is needed, given your tetanus vaccine dose in January 2026.

Since you received a tetanus dose in January 2026 — just about 4 months ago — you are well protected. Tetanus vaccination provides protection for 5 years after a booster dose, and a clean cut from a barber's blade that was bleeding is considered a clean wound, not a tetanus-prone wound. No additional tetanus injection is needed for this incident. Just clean the cut thoroughly and keep it covered.
Next Steps
No action needed for tetanus in this case. Feel free to consult me directly on Practo if the wound shows signs of infection (redness, swelling, pus) in the coming days.
