A kitchen knife cut that is bleeding continuously is usually due to a superficial but well-vascularized fingertip wound. Most such cuts stop with proper compression.
If bleeding is not stopping, it is typically because adequate pressure was not maintained long enough, not because something serious is wrong — unless the cut is deep.
Next Steps
✅ Step 1: Wash briefly (10–20 seconds only)
Rinse under clean running water to remove dirt. Do not keep washing repeatedly.
✅ Step 2: Apply firm direct pressure
• Take clean gauze or a clean cloth
• Press firmly over the cut
• Do NOT remove it to check repeatedly
• Maintain continuous pressure for 10 full minutes without lifting
Most bleeding stops with uninterrupted compression.
✅ Step 3: Elevate the hand
Keep the hand raised above heart level while pressing.
If bleeding still continues after 10–15 minutes:
• Apply a fresh gauze on top (do not remove the first one)
• Continue pressure for another 10 minutes

What NOT to apply
❌ No turmeric
❌ No coffee powder
❌ No toothpaste
❌ No random powders
❌ No Dettol directly inside wound
These delay healing.
Health Tips
After bleeding stops
• Clean gently
• Apply Betadine (povidone iodine) once
• Cover with sterile bandage
⸻
Wash with clean water and press firmly with a clean cloth for 10–15 minutes. Keep the hand raised.
If bleeding doesn’t stop or the cut is deep, please consult nearby doctor physically for proper treatment
If bleeding still continues after pressure
• Apply an ice pack wrapped in cloth over the dressing (cold helps constrict vessels).
• A hemostatic powder (like medical bleeding stop powder) can help if available.
You should go to doctor / emergency if
• Bleeding does not stop after 15–20 minutes of firm pressure
• Cut is deep, gaping, or you can see fat/tissue
• Finger movement is difficult or numbness present
• You are not vaccinated for tetanus in last 5 years
Important
Do NOT keep removing the cloth to check repeatedly — that restarts bleeding.
