Dengue fever
My niece has been suffering from fever for the last three days. Today we have tested her for dengue. Her result came NS1 positive with value 96. Please give me clarity on whether this NS1 result is related to the severity of the disease. She is not having fever now and started eating. Her platelet count is 2.1 lakhs. Do we admit her now? She is looking better than yesterday. But worried about the NS1 high result. IgG and IgM are negative. Please suggest.

Positive NS1 conforms the active dengue infection ,but will not reflect the severity of the infection. At this stage she doesn't need any hospital admission.Adequate fluids and rest are important. You could repeat the CBC and platelets tests to compare.

It is not related to the severity of the disease. It is related to the number of days since the patient acquired the infection.

The NS1 (Non-Structural Protein 1) test is primarily used as a screening tool for the early detection of dengue fever. The NS1 antigen is detectable in the blood during the acute phase of dengue infection, typically from the first day of fever up to around day 7. A positive NS1 result indicates an active dengue infection. The NS1 test itself does not determine the severity of the disease. It simply confirms the presence of dengue virus
Next Steps
No need to admit , keep adequate hydration. But get in touch with the CBC report as I need to see the hematocrit. There are certain warning signs in Dengue.
