Chronic knee pain and stiffness
Namaste doctor, My mother has chronic knee pain on both knees. The right knee is somewhat manageable but there is too much pain in the left knee. She is obese and weighs around 81 k.g. and height of 5.2ft. She has chronic hypothyroidism also and for that, she takes thyroxin tablets regularly. Due to household work, she gets tired and develops pain near the knee region and faces difficulty to move freely.  She had x-ray long before and there was very less gap between her knee joints. We don't wish to go for surgery or injection. When asked, she says some nerve near the knee region is causing issues in movement and causing immense pain. I was thinking of giving her "Chinchadi Tailam" which I found while searching for a good oil for arthritis and joint stiffness. Also, I got to know about "Bala thailam" capsule. Could you please advise whether she can take the capsule and massage with that oil ? Regards

It is good to see you concerned about your mother's health and wanting to do the right thing. However, the pain is just one of the symptoms of an inner root cause which need to be addressed which is inflammation.  For this follow HAIP DIET based on the anti-inflammatory principles of Ayurveda that will not only help in loosing weight but also reduce inflammation. Apply mahanarayan tailam pichu on the affected knee twice in a day. Taking a consult may be beneficial as not only will i be able to get to the root of the disease, but also help correct the imbalances with proper supplementation. The consultation is valid for a month. However,  if budget is a concern just follow the above remedies which will help with her pain considerably.  All the best.

Namaste.. Arthritis changes in the knee joint can  definitely be treated. Usually it takes a course of 2 to 3 months for complete recovery..it will include oral medicines and also external treatment for replacement of synovial fluid and to improve muscle strength around the joint.  With thyroid since the absorption is less in the body , need to work on that as well. Medicines can be advised only after interaction with patient regarding her pain intensity and other vitals with her routine lifestyle. Thank you.

Before going apply any treatment there is need of assessment of joint condition i.e regarding tenderness , swelling temperature of knee joint. If it is present , avoid oil application. Start upanaha sweda. Once symptoms get reduced start the application of oil like chinchadi taila or Mahavishagarbha taila etc.

Namaste, and thank you for sharing the details. Your mother’s symptoms suggest chronic osteoarthritis with obesity-related strain, and her hypothyroidism may also contribute to joint stiffness and fatigue. Since surgery is not preferred, Ayurveda offers effective non-invasive options. Regarding your queries: ✅ Chinchadi Tailam – Yes, it's a good choice for external application in joint stiffness and Vata-related pain. Warm the oil slightly and massage gently, especially before bath. ✅ Bala Thailam Capsules – These are meant for internal use and are generally used in neuromuscular weakness, Vata disorders, and inflammation. However, it's best to avoid any internal oily formulations without professional assessment, especially due to her obesity and sluggish metabolism from hypothyroidism. Suggested Plan: External Massage: Use Chinchadi Tailam daily on knees with warm fomentation (like hot towel or steam). Herbal supplements like Shallaki, Guggulu formulations (e.g., Yograj Guggulu or Simhanada Guggulu) may help, but should be prescribed specifically. Diet & lifestyle changes to reduce weight and inflammation are essential. Gentle yoga and supervised knee strengthening are beneficial. Feel free to consult me for a customized treatment plan including internal medicines, diet, and lifestyle support for long-term knee health.
