Chest pain
I’ve been having episodes for quite some time where I feel chest discomfort, often starting after acidity or gas, with a lot of burping. Once this happens, my anxiety suddenly increases and my heart rate goes up and feels like it doesn’t settle easily. During these episodes my neck and body feel very stiff, and even deep breathing doesn’t calm things down much. I’ve had ECGs done several times and they’ve always been normal, but in the moment it still feels frightening and I worry that something might be wrong with my heart. I’ve discussed this with doctors many times and was told it could be anxiety-related, and advised to take anxiety medication or see a psychologist. I want to understand what treatment or medicines could actually help, because these episodes keep recurring and are affecting my daily life.

Hi, Based on your description, these episodes are very characteristic of anxiety/panic attacks triggered by acidity or gastric discomfort, rather than a heart problem. The sequence you describe—acid reflux or gas → chest discomfort/burping → sudden anxiety → fast heart rate, stiffness, fear- is extremely common. Repeated normal ECGs further support that your heart is structurally fine. Acidity and reflux can stimulate chest nerves and the vagus nerve, which can mimic cardiac symptoms. Once anxiety kicks in, the body enters a “fight-or-flight” response, causing racing heart, muscle tightness, and a feeling of loss of control, which understandably feels frightening even when you know it may be anxiety-related.

Hi What you’re describing is very commonly seen in panic or anxiety episodes with strong body sensations, often triggered by acidity or gas. The gut–chest connection can mimic heart symptoms, and once the sensation starts, anxiety escalates it causing racing heart, stiffness, and a feeling of loss of control. Even with normal ECGs, the brain’s fear response keeps misfiring, making it feel dangerous in the moment. This is not a heart problem, but a learned anxiety–body loop. The most effective treatment is therapy, especially CBT, which works on breaking the fear–symptom cycle, reducing health anxiety, and retraining your nervous system to respond calmly. Medication can support this temporarily, but therapy addresses the root so episodes reduce in frequency and intensity over time. With proper psychological treatment, these symptoms are very manageable and reversible. Take therapy. You can connect with me on nine two six six seven two six zero six five.
