Burping after feeding
We have a new born baby who is 1 month old. For the last 2 weeks we have observed that he sleeps very less during the night. It's not that he's sleeping soundly during the day as well. He whines and moans a lot during his sleep which eventually wakes him up, thus the less sleep. We consulted a pediatrician and he suggested it's due to gas and told us to give regular tummy time and burp after every feed. Now, particularly at night, my baby usually falls asleep while feeding. The dilemma is if I get him to burp after the feed, it wakes him up and then getting him back to sleep is another challenge. If we get him to feed he will fall asleep but burping him will be missed and as a result it might wake him up later at night. Please suggest what we can do to avoid this cycle.

Whines and Moaning are Normal that age , they occur in light sleep , not indicate pain ,indigestion etc…If baby with closed eyes just feed no need of burping, Tilting position, prone position other simple ways to avoid burping. Sleep is must for babies,If moaning they are still in light sleep if u start burping they wake up.Better not disturb the baby.

Allow him burping by keep him along the shoulder. You can gently swaddle the baby too. Sleep cycle in a baby develops somewhere between 6 weeks to 3 months. Ensure the child is well fed, because hungry babies are usually cranky and there is difficulty in sleeping.
Next Steps
1. Allow breastfeeding every 2-3 hours. 2. Burping after every feed, keeping him along the shoulder and gentle rub on the back. 3. Tummy time when he is awake 4. Avoid top feeds , promote breastfeed as much as possible. 5. Have patience, sleep cycle takes time to develop. will settle by 3 months 6. You can try Cholicaid drops 2 drops three times a day because babies develop colic at this age. 7. Gentle exercises like circular motion of fingers on tummy, back rubs, tummy time, gentle rocking of legs back and forth may help
