Bp wild fluctuations in one day
Hi! I had been having some reflux issues so went to local doctor- bp checked -140/90- acceptable Then i went to main hospital for some suggested blood tests- there i felt relaxed n hydrated so decided to get it checked in ER- it was 173/113- the highest i have ever seen- ( digital machine) They sent me to opd doctor who again checked- some digital machine where u put ur arm inside- 155/84 and then asked nurse to checked manually- 135/80 I am clueless how such fluctuations occured? Machines were both fine since other peoppe had ok readings! Doctor told me to trust only the manual reading which was completely acceptable

Blood pressure can vary significantly within minutes due to several factors like anxiety or stress, physical activity, improper cuffing, infection, trauma or inflammation. So it is most likely due to temporary physiological changes rather than true hypertension. Manual sphygmomanometer readings done by trained staff are generally more accurate, especially when the patient is relaxed and seated properly
Next Steps
• Sit quietly for 5 minutes before measuring BP • Keep feet flat on the floor and arm at heart level • Avoid caffeine, smoking, or exercise 30 minutes before checking • Take 2–3 readings and average them

Hello, I am Dr. Romain Rajan, General Physician (Ex Govt Medical Officer at RML Hospital, New Delhi), and your case has been allotted to me. Thank you for explaining the sequence of readings clearly. I understand why these fluctuations look confusing, but this situation is actually quite common. Why such fluctuations happened Blood pressure can change within minutes depending on several factors such as: • Anxiety or stress during hospital visits • Movement or walking just before measurement • Hydration status • Body posture and cuff position • Different machines used for measurement Digital machines sometimes show higher or variable readings, especially if the arm is not positioned correctly or if the patient is tense. Most reliable reading In your case: • Digital reading showed 173/113 • Another digital machine showed 155/84 • Manual reading was 135/80 Manual readings done by trained staff are generally more reliable, and 135/80 is within acceptable range. What this likely represents This pattern often happens due to situational or anxiety related BP elevation, sometimes called white coat effect, rather than true persistent hypertension. What you should do now • Do not panic over a single high reading • Check BP at home after 5 to 10 minutes of rest • Measure at the same time daily for a few days • Avoid caffeine, smoking, or exercise 30 minutes before measurement If the average readings stay below 140/90, it is generally acceptable. When to seek medical review • If repeated readings remain above 140/90 • If you develop headache, chest pain, dizziness, or vision changes At present, based on the manual reading and your age, there is no immediate cause for concern. For a personalised one to one consultation and BP monitoring plan, you can reach out to me on WhatsApp at 85271646 seven seven. Wishing you good health. Dr. Romain Rajan General Physician

Hello. Blood pressure can vary between readings depending on stress, anxiety, movement, hydration, and the device used. Digital machines may sometimes give higher or fluctuating values, especially if the cuff position or body posture is not ideal. Your manual reading of 135/80 is within an acceptable range, which is why your doctor advised relying more on it. You may consider: • Checking BP after resting for 5–10 minutes • Avoiding caffeine or stress before measurement • Monitoring BP at home for a few days Since interpretation depends on repeated readings and overall health history, a detailed review would be helpful. You may book an online consultation for proper evaluation and personalized treatment guidance.

BP can vary due to stress, anxiety, activity or different machines. Digital readings may sometimes be higher. Since the manual reading was normal, it is reassuring. Monitor BP calmly for a few days.

What you experienced is quite common and usually does not mean you have severe hypertension. Blood pressure can fluctuate significantly within minutes due to several factors. The readings you had were: • 140/90 (first check) • 173/113 (ER digital machine) • 155/84 (automated arm device) • 135/80 (manual reading) The manual reading of 135/80 mmHg is generally considered more reliable, especially when taken properly by a trained person with a stethoscope. Automated machines can sometimes give higher readings due to anxiety, movement, wrong cuff size, or improper positioning. A very common reason for sudden high readings in hospitals is White Coat Hypertension, where BP temporarily rises due to stress, anxiety, or the hospital environment. ⸻ Why the BP fluctuated? Blood pressure can change because of: • Anxiety or stress while in hospital • Recent walking, talking, or movement before measurement • Full bladder or dehydration • Incorrect cuff size or arm position • Different machines and measurement techniques • Acid reflux discomfort, which can temporarily increase BP due to stress response It is normal for BP to vary 10–30 mmHg within minutes depending on these factors.
Next Steps
Instead of relying on a single reading, doctors usually confirm hypertension using: • Home BP monitoring for 5–7 days • Measure BP twice daily (morning and evening) • Sit quietly 5 minutes before measuring • Record the average readings Normal targets for a young adult: • Ideal:
Health Tips
• Avoid caffeine, smoking, or exercise 30 minutes before BP check. • Sit with back supported, feet flat, arm at heart level. • Use the same arm each time. • Take 2 readings 1–2 minutes apart and average them. Also, since you mentioned reflux symptoms, conditions like Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease can sometimes cause anxiety or chest discomfort that makes BP temporarily rise. ⸻ ✅ Bottom line: Your manual BP of 135/80 is reassuring, and the fluctuations likely occurred due to stress or measurement differences. If you want, you can also tell me: • Your height, weight, • Whether you consume caffeine or smoke, and I can help assess your true risk of hypertension and reflux triggers more accurately.

Blood pressure can fluctuate during the day due to stress, anxiety, activity, hydration, or measurement technique. Digital machines may also vary. Manual BP (135/80) is usually more reliable, so that reading is acceptable. Recheck BP at rest if needed.
